The following kinds of behaviour may be harassment:
- Material that is racist, sexist, sexually explicit, homophobic and is displayed in the workplace, circulated or put in someone’s belongings
- Verbal abuse or comments that put down people because of age, race, colour, sex, appearance, religion, marital or parental status, sexual preference, disability, impairment or national origin.
- Jokes about someone’s appearance, body shape or any other personal matter that may cause embarrassment and make people feel uncomfortable
- Staring or leering in a sexual manner
- Repeated sexual invitation when the person invited has refused similar invitations before. No means ‘NO’
- Intrusive questions about sexual activity
- Sexual or physical contact, such as putting your arm around someone at work
- Offensive gestures such as wolf whistling
All harassment is serious and illegal. Innocent intention is not an acceptable defence.
